Exploring the region’s Pre-Roman & Roman Past
The region is rich of numerous examples of the pre-roman and roman past of the Region. Around 600 BC, the Languedoc saw populations settling in with Greek colonies (Agde), Phenicians (e.g: Port Vendres) and Etruscans (Lattes) prospered along the Coast. Oppida, fortified hills facilitating exchanges between the different populations were built and can still be seen today (Ambrussum, Nissan-Lez-Enserune, Aumes etc…). Romans progressively dominated the region and left behind a rich heritage of infrastructural and civil monuments. Besides world famous sites such as the Pont du Gard or the Nimes Arenas, dozens of other examples of this prosperous era can be discovered.

The Southern Languedoc-Roussillon region is where the Pyrénées Mountain range and the foothills of the Massif Central come down to the Mediterranean, from the Spanish border in the West to the Rhone Valley in the East.
